A total station performs the same functions as a theodolite, with the exception of some additional capabilities that make it a better mousetrap. It combines the functions of a modern theodolite with those of an auto level and an electronic distance metre. Total stations can record more accurate data over longer distances than theodolites by emitting laser pulses. Because the data is electronically stored, it can be transferred to a computer for analysis. This is extremely useful because it can be operated by a single person and allows for the measurement and recording of survey points.
